PAGASA spots new storm near Surigao City

The first of the four storms expected to enter the Philippines in the last two months of 2008 have been spotted by weather bureau PAGASA near Surigao City on Thursday morning.

PAGASA said Tropical Depression Quinta was located 40 kilometers northeast of Surigao City. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour and was moving west at 19 kph.

Public storm signal No. 1 has been hoisted over Masbate, Romblon, Camiguin, Biliran, Eastern Samar, Western Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Iloilo, Aklan, Capiz, Antique, Guimaras Island, Cuyo Island, Surigao del Norte, Siargao Island and Dinagat Island.

PAGASA expects the storm to move southwest of Iloilo City on Friday morning and to Puerto Princesa on Saturday.

Nathaniel Cruz, the weather bureau's chief forecaster, had told radio dzMM that PAGASA is expecting four more storms to enter the country before the year ends.

Cruz had said that the storms will enter the country starting November. (abs-cbnnews.com)
