Members of panel to oversee Lakas, Kampi merger named

The merger of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats and the Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) continues to gain grounds with the completion of the nine-man special committee headed by Presidential Adviser for Political Affairs Gabriel Claudio.

The Lakas panel would be headed by Secretary to the Cabinet Silvestre Bello III with Iloilo Rep. Art Defensor, Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos and Local Water Utilities Administration chairman and Lakas spokesman Prospero Pichay as members.

On the other hand, the KAMPI panel is headed by Sorsogon Rep. Joey Solis and composed of Reps. Pablo Garcia (Cebu), Francisco Matugas (Surigao del Norte) and Amado Bagatsing (Manila).

Claudio, who is also senior deputy secretary general of Lakas, said with the completion of the two panels, and "with enough patience and cooperation from both sides," he is confident that the merger of the two parties within three months as "reasonable."

"What we want is an authentic, working merger that will produce positive results for both parties and the administration," Claudio said.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo last January 29 ordered the creation of the National Consolidation and Unification Committee to oversee the merger of Lakas and Kampi.

President Arroyo is the current chairman of Lakas, while Kampi is the party she founded in 1998.
