Pagasa monitoring SPLA near Surigao

A shallow low-pressure area (SLPA) is moving towards Mindanao but state weather forecasters said it is too early to tell if it will intensify into a cyclone.

Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecaster Gilbert Aquino said they are keeping tabs on the movement of the SLPA.

"Sa ngayon binabantayan pa natin, di pa lumalapit. Nasa may Pacific pa naman ito. Hindi pa siya lumalapit [We are keeping watch over its movements. It is still far away, it is still in the Pacific, it is not close enough]," Aquino said in an interview on dzBB radio, when asked about the chances of the SLPA intensifying into a cyclone.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, Pagasa said that as of 2 a.m., the SLPA was estimated at 310 km east of Mindanao.

"Eastern Visayas and Eastern Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies except for isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms," it said.

Moderate to occasionally strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Northern Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to occasionally rough, it said.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northeast and east with slight to moderate seas, it added. - GMANews.TV
