Unidentified assassins shot dead the vice mayor of the southern Philippine town of San Francisco, reports said Saturday.
Nasario Gastardo was killed by two armed men in front of his house on Friday night in Surigao City. The 51-year old politician died while being rushed to hospital. He was shot in the head by the assailants, the ABS-CBN television reported.
The identities of the attacks were unknown and so was the motive of the killing, which occurred ahead of the local and national elections next year.
It was not immediately known whether the attack was politically motivated or not, but the town which coastal town which is part of Surigao del Norte province is also a known lair of communist rebels blamed for the spate of attacks in the southern Mindanao Island.
