Comelec asked to check voters' list in Surigao del Norte

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) was asked to double-check its registered voters list to ensure that these individuals do not cast their ballots twice.

This was the public request made by a congressional candidate running for the second district of Surigao del Norte after his camp discovered 1,000 double registrants at the same district.

As a result, Surigao City Mayor Alfonso Casurra expressed fears that double registrants may vote for another precinct and may jump from one to another.

Casurra, who is running as the Nacionalista Party’s bet for Surigao del Norte’s second district, claimed that it is unfair not only to him but also to other candidates in vying for other elective positions if the issue remains unchecked.

The Comelec should investigate the matter now to avoid flying voters and ensure honest, orderly and peaceful elections, he said.

The whole province has a total number of 288,663 registered voters, more than half of which belonged to the vote-rich second district which comprised mainland towns of Surigao del Norte.

The first congressional district comprised island towns of Dapa, Del Carmen, Burgos, Pilar, San Benito, San Isidro, Santa Monica and Socorro, all found in Siargao Island, the country’s surfing capital.

The remaining 12 municipalities including Surigao City which is a component city of the province belonged to the second district, Surigao City alone has total 83,218 registered voters. - BS/RJAB Jr., GMANews.TV
