As part of the nationwide Earth Day 2010 celebration, officials and personnel of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the province urged all Surigaonons to join the “10 Million Movement” (10MM) for Mother Earth.
PENRO Claudio Asumen said that the 10 MM is the highlight of the Earth Day celebration on April 22, 2010 with its theme, "Hamon ng Panahon: Climate Change, 10 Milyong Solusyon (Kilos na! Ngayon Na!).
Recognizing that Climate Change is the most pressing issue today especially given the vulnerability of our country to its consequences as proven by the recent experiences with Typhoons Ondoy and Peping thus the movement was conceptualized, said Asumen.
The Earth Day Network Philippines with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Batasan Kalikasan Foundation and othe partners and members, are leading the 10MM, a movement of men and women who stand up for the environment.
“We invite everyone to be one with us to take the stand for the integrity of creation by joining the 10MM. Sign-up and commit a Green Act for Mother Earth to www. 10mm.com and enlist your doable activities. Let us encourage and inspire our family members, relatives, friends and officemates to do the same so that we can create a critical mass of individuals championing the environment,” Asumen said.
“The goal is to gather 10 Million individual commitments to do something for Mother Earth,” said Asumen.
He also said that the celebration becomes more relevant as we face disasters all over the world. The challenges require a sustained and united action involving all sectors of society to ensure the sustainable management of our environment.
“And so, let us give our Earth/Environment a chance, to be a good place to live in. Let us work together! Help Save Our Earth! “Earth Day is Everyday for Everybody,” Asumen concluded.
Earth Day is celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faith and nationalities. More than a billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year, thus the DENR-Surigao del Norte in coordination with PEMO, City ENRO, and Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau (MGB) 13 have prepared a month long calendar of events to invite the public to participate in the crusade for Mother Earth.
