As two candidates for Barangay Chairman in Siargao Island garnered the same number of votes, election officials settled the race with a coin toss, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) reported.
The two candidates — Godofredo Sajol and Apple Tiu — were running for the same post in Barangay 8, Dapa, Surigao del Norte in Siargao Island.
According to the report of the PIA regional office, officials of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) were on hand to witness the coin flipping.
The PIA report said coin tossing is a legal and acceptable way of settling deadlocks when candidates garner the same number of votes.
In an interview with GMANews.TV, Atty. Geraldine Samson, Comelec head of Surigao del Norte, said the coin toss went in favor of Sajol, who beat Tiu, the incumbent barangay chairperson.
Samson explained that the coin flipping was done three times. Sajol was declared the winner after winning the coin toss two out of three times. –Ben Serrano/VVP, GMANews.TV
