A big crowd of Surigaonons trooped to the Surigao City Cultural Center and availed themselves of the government’s jobs fair, livelihood and other poverty alleviation programs on Friday.
Jubilant job seekers from this city and other parts of the province patiently lined up for the one-stop shop processing of applications for overseas employment.
Individuals and other small business entrepreneurs, as well as members of cooperatives and non-government organizations also availed of the skills and livelihood training and other livelihood projects offered by the government.
Among those present at the jampacked Surigao City Cultural Center were local officials led by Mayor Ernesto T. Matugas.
The big jobs fair, livelihood and techno-transfer activity was initiated by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA)-Regional Coordinating Counil (RCC) in Northeastern Mindanao (Caraga Region).
The project was in line with DOLE’s commitment of creating an efficient application processing for overseas work and seeking redress for grievances specifically outlined in the 22-point agenda on labor and employment of the Aquino Administration.
According to RCC Chairperson Ofelia Domingo, the one-stop shop activity was highlighted with skills assessment, financial literacy for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and livelihood skills demonstration.
She said many individuals also availed of the “Pangkabuhayan” techno skills such as making hand sanitizer, perfume, cologne, dish washing liquid, fabric softener, and trendy balloon, among others.
“This big affair in our city is a big help to our people and even in nearby provinces and cities of this region,” said Mayor Matugas.
The city’s chief executive expressed elation with President Benigno S. Aquino III’s labor agenda and is hoping for more jobs fairs in the region in the future.
