Surigao Norte eyes P500-M income in 2011

The provincial government of Surigao del Norte is eyeing more than P500-million income in 2011, an official of the province disclosed Tuesday.

Surigao del Norte has been known for its rich mineral endowment and it is for this reason that this province had become a popular destination of foreign and domestic business groups and private companies because of mining investments and other agricultural production, tourism, and fishing industry.

Large-scale and even-small scale mining investors are mushrooming at this northeastern tip province in Mindanao.

In this province, a large track of land was also identified as Mineral Reservation Areas, where minerals are owned and managed by the state.

Considering the active presence of mining resources in the province, it is significant that mining is given primary attention by the provincial chief executive and by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) through legislation of laws.

For a mining company alone located in the towns of Claver and Taganito, its management is opening some 4,000 jobs next year in preparation for their full operation, said Surigao del Norte Gov. Sol F. Matugas, in an interview, along with her husband Rep. Francisco T. Matugas (1st District, Surigao del Norte).

She said the tourism industry and even fishing and other agricultural and mineral products are also picking up and added to the burgeoning income of the province.

“The influx of big businesses in the province makes more than P500 million in income even more next year and the succeeding years,” said the governor who is a former regional director of the Department of Education (DepEd).

She said the thrust of the provincial government which is upgrading all the development projects such as education, health, food security, agriculture, environment, infrastructure, and livelihood “can now move on.” (Manila Bulletin)
