A predawn quake measuring magnitude 5.1 jolted residents of the Surigao area in Mindanao Friday, but state seismologists said there was no expected casualty or damage.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was recorded at 4:03 a.m., and was tectonic in origin.
In a bulletin updated past 8 a.m., Phivolcs said the epicenter was at 71 km northeast of General Luna in Siargao
Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity IV in Dinagat Island, San Jose; Intensity III in Pilar, Siargao Island; and Intensity II in Surigao City.
However, it said no damage or aftershock was expected from the predawn quake.
The United States Geological Survey, for its part, measured the quake at magnitude 5.0.
In its bulletin, USGS said the epicenter was at 80 km south-southeast of Guiuan, Samar; 95 km northeast of Surigao; 150 km southeast of Tacloban, Leyte; and 720 km southeast of Manila. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
