House Speaker Sonny Belmonte will designate a caretaker for the soon-to be vacated district of convicted Dinagat Islands Rep. Ruben Ecleo, Jr.
Belmonte ruled out calling for a special election for the district of Dinagat Islands.
Belmonte says it is possible that district maybe reintegrated into one of Surigao del Norte’s districts. Dinagat Islands is a new province whose creation is currently under question.
Right now, Belmonte has ordered the house secretary general to get certified true copies of the decisions rendered in 2006 by the sandiganbayan and a certfication that they have become final and executory.
Belmonte says once they have those documents, these will be presented to the plenary.
Belmonte reiterated there is no need for proceedings at the House of Representatives Committee on Ethics and Privileges. Belmonte says that committee is tasked to handle offenses of incumbent congressmen. Belmonte notes Ecleo’s case stems from an offense as a mayor in the province of surigao del norte.
On Thursday, the anti graft court issued a resolution saying its 2006 conviction of Ecleo for 3 counts of graft—is final and executory. Among the penalties, aside from jail time—is perpeptual and absolute disqualification from public office. (RG Cruz)
