LPA spotted off Surigao City may cause floods, landslides

The government's weather bureau today warned residents in Visayas and Mindanao of flash floods and landslides after spotting a low pressure area (LPA) off Surigao City.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the LPA was spotted at 360 kilometers east of Surigao City in Surigao del Sur.

PAGASA said the LPA was embedded along the Intertropical Convergence Zone affecting Visayas and Mindanao regions.

It said that widespread rains may pour over the eastern and central parts of Visayas and northeastern Mindanao, "which may trigger flash floods and landslides."

Luzon, including Metro Manila, was expected to experience scattered rainshowers and the rest of Mindanao and Visayas, PAGASA said.
On Wednesday, heavy rains triggered a flash flood in Samal City, displacing 78 families and leaving a six-year-old boy dead.

A landslide also took place in Sitio Langam, Barangay Coronon in Sta. Cruz town, Davao del Sur, leaving two children dead. (philstar)
