Tourism takes on a social dimension as Surigao City's "Suroy Surigao" embarks on a "voluntourism" program aimed at rediscovering "The City of Island Adventures" and at the same time, extending social relief to the communities being visited.
Launched on May 28 to June 5, the program is a unique feature of the domestic tourism initiative of City Mayor Ernesto T. Matugas involving the Women of Worth (WOW) Surigao, to boost the promotion of the city's natural wonders, which have remained largely unexplored by locals.
WOW Surigao is a newly-formed association of businesswomen, lady civic leaders and professionals, which was organized by First Lady Filomena Matugas and now serves as a partner of the local government in promoting Tourism and Community service..
Mayor Matugas said that Suroy Surigao has developed into a noble undertaking because the lady members of WOW Surigao will be donating school bags and supplies to needy children in the 54 barangays. "Suroy" is a local term which means to travel. (Annette Villaces/Surigao City)
