DENR Secretary Ramon Paje yesterday announced the designation of Governor Sol Matugas as Environment Czar for Surigao del Norte in order to protect the province from the disastrous activities of illegal loggers.
The announcement was made by Sec. Paje during the Environment Summit held on Nov. 29, 2011 at the Surigao del Norte Provincial Convention Center which was attended by more than 500 delegates from large-scale and small-scale mining companies, local government units and members of the local media.
Paje said that as environment czar, the lady governor is authorized and/or tasked to apprehend illegal loggers and to confiscate illegally-cut logs which will be turned-over to the Department of Education for use as chairs and desks of schoolchildren.
The environment secretary also disclosed that he found Surigao del Norte as the greenest province in the country following an aerial survey he conducted which revealed the very thick forest reserve in the area.
Gov. Matugas, on her part, thanked Sec. Paje for the trust and confidence given to her as environment czar of the province.
The event was also attended by Rep. Francisco Matugas and Rep. Guillermo Romarate, Jr. of the first and second congressional districts, respectively. (mindanao.com)
