GENERAL LUNA, Siargao Island -- After a week-long competition,
surfers from 11 countries and tourists from all over the world,
including the Philippines, were treated to a night of fun and
entertainment, courtesy of San Miguel Beer, the country's leading beer
brand and among the sponsors of the recently-concluded 19th Siargao
International Surfing Cup.
Thousands of tourists, foreign and local, trooped to this beautiful
island, touted as a surfing mecca and listed as one of the "46 Places To
Go in 2013" published online by US-based New York Times.
After five days of grueling through huge waves and went head-to-head
in the world-class surfing spot at Cloud 9 here, the event was a
breather for 59 surfers -- 48 men and 11 women -- who joined in the
competition and hundreds of surfing enthusiasts from all over the world.
From Cloud 9, everyone headed to the Baywalk, venue of the event, and party the night away.
On hand during the event to ensure everything was in its proper perspective was SMB sales supervisor Dino Docdocil.
The event, dubbed as Sugar and Spice: Everything is Nice Grand Party,
featured performing bands and club deejays from the cities of Davao and
Cagayan de Oro, making the huge crowd in a party mode.
For a while, the party was interrupted as firedancers breathtakingly
performed with their pois, amazing the crowd as they played with fire on
stage.
But what made the night hotter was the Bikini Open, a non-competition
segment of the event that brought in models from the cities of CDO,
Butuan and Davao.
The crowd went frenzy as these sexy babes and hunks gamely strutted
down the catwalk in their skimpy bikinis with a wide screen featuring
international players surfing on the big waves of Cloud 9 serving as the
backdrop.
This year's surfing event here, set last September 22-28, went bigger
as it was sanctioned by the Asian Surfing Championship as a six-star
circuit event.
The annual surfing competition has been a boost to this island's
tourism industry. Data from the regional office of the Department of
Tourism showed tourist arrivals on the island in 2012 increased by 45
percent as compared to the previous year. (sun-star.com.ph)
